Panasonic Lumix G7 Review: "Great 4K In Small Package"

This is my panasonic lumix g7. And this is my review.

So i’ve had this camera for about 1 year now. And this is my review after a long time of using it.

First let me say, this review is not in regards of photos, but of 4K video. I have never used it to film in 1080p either, so if that is what you are looking for, then this video is not for you.

Build quality
I wanna start with the worst part of this camera, and work my way up to the better parts of the camera. The build quality is sturdy, no squeaky parts, but the plastic thats its built out of is rather bad quality to be absolutely honest. as you can see there are several scratches on the camera, and it looks like I have been throwing this thing around. But the truth is that I take care of my camera, but compared to a canon camera (like the 600D also known as the T3i) where I never got scratches, this one seems to have a bad build quality. The scratches you see if from when I have been placing the camera on rocks and stuff. That will do it. But to me it hasn’t been a issue because I don't mind scratches on the camera. In all honesty I kind of like it, because it reminds me that I have used this camera fully.
Still if you are after a great build quality and weather sealing, this camera is not the one you want.

the screen
the screen is great, very detailed, and it has touch. Not as good as smartphones though. but its good enough. the menys are ok to scroll through, but thats about it. I cant say I use it with great ease, because there is a lot of scrolling that has to be done. I wish they had done a better job making everything easy accessible. at least they put in several programable buttons on it, so you can get quick access to the feature you need.

the looks of it
as you can see, I have the silver edition. there is all black as well. but I really like the silver version for some reason. I think it is a mighty good looking camera.

size and weight
the bad plastic is what makes this camera low weight, and thats a big plus when you are out walking and taking photos or filming. And I love the size of micro four thirds cameras. I can easily fit this in larger pockets. Maybe not jeans though, but I don't use jeans. Like ever.

Battery life
The battery life is GREAT. And I mean Great. I can easily film all day on one battery charge. Even if i have extra batteries with me always. But compared with for instance a iPhone 7, the battery life will last all day when filming.

features
the built in wifi is great, its great when you are filming your self and want to use a smart phone as a view finder. For some strange reason though, when I connect it to my iphone, it looses wifi occasionally. But with android devices it works flawless. If we are talking input lag, its almost filming in real time.

It has a great time lapse mode, where it will actually create the time lapse video in 4k in the camera. everything can be set up from your smartphone. I like that.

Picture quality
The main reason to get this camera, is the superb image quality. Compared to say, iPhone 7, this camera has a bigger sensor, not as big as APS-C, or full frame, But it will get great low light shots. I would say even to a impressive level. Of course, mostly it depends on what lenses you are using.
There are lots and lots of manual settings, and you have the zebra patterns to help you avoid over saturated or over exposed shots. and it works really great.
I use my canon lens 50mm f1.8 a lot on this, with the help of a adapter, and with all the manual settings, I can get the perfect shot using even when not having any auto-anything.
lets talk about that… auto focus. yes, if you have the right lens, the G7 will focus correctly, and rather quick, and quiet. BUT… for all you who are new at movie making, trust me, when you’ve learned basic film teqniques, you will do everything manual anyway. Which is what I always do.

summary
so I enjoy this camera a lot, there is very little to complain about. Just to prove how much I actually love this camera, let me show you something. I have actually two Panasonic g7. Thats right, thats how much I like it. There are only two things I think could be better. the build quality, and the lack of inbuilt Image stabilization. Some of my lenses have stabilization. but I wish I could have it on all my lenses.

Do I recommend it?
well, no..
what?

thats right. because at the time of this review, panasonic has already released a lot of newer and better camera for the same price you can get this one. I recommend that you look at cameras like the panasonic GX8, or gx80. with built in image stabilization.
